Should we 'Apologise' to Former President Sukarno?

Contesting opinions on whether or not the country has to make clarification on nation's history regarding Sukarno continues to be debated.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Many of the subsequent generations of those who support Indonesian First President Sukarno continuously insist and demand for the country’s apologetic gesture as to clear up the man’s involvement in the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) back in the 1960s. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) necessitates clarification on the nation’s history especially about how the common misconception suggesting the Father of the Nation’s Proclamation controversial support for the communist party and its undertakings during the time in which he reigned over the country.

“We should make necessary clarifications on our history book. As we all know, the name Sukarno is still linked to communism and the party PKI,” PDIP member, Masinton Pasaribu said, Jakarta, Tuesday (6/10/2015).

According to him, formal apology from the current government in the name of the country will ultimately help the victimized in the past to find closure and also will give a sign of respect to those who have been accused mercilessly without any backed- up evidence. The Party firmly believes that a simple ‘sorry’ spur fairness and justice to many people.

“Our country also needs to extend its pardoning gesture to the individuals who have been accused of things they did not do or ignite in the past and to the victimized who were actually innocent,” he concluded.

The Deputy of Democratic Party, Syarief Hasan however feels that it is not necessary for such apologetic gesture to take place as he feels that it would instead create another mayhem in the domestic arena.

According to him, the country has done its part of appreciating former President Sukarno by giving him an award and presented one under his name back in 2012. That for him, is enough sign of appreciation and recognition.

“He has been dubbed as the National Hero and is widely known so I suppose saying sorry is highly unnecessary. Requesting for an apology will only make his status questionable,” he said. (Akp/Ein)
