Greece is Now a Supporter for Palestine Recognition

Greece is finally set to accept the state of Palestine following vote in parliament held on Tuesday.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Greece is finally set to accept the state of Palestine following legitimate parliamentary vote to actualize such recognition. The parliamentary voting process on Tuesday 22 December 2015 was attended by the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his two day visit in Athens starting on Monday included meetings with Greece President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras as cited in Al Jazeera.

President Mahmoud Abbas was given the privilege of addressing his speech before the Greek Parliament on Tuesday. In his speech, he spoke of how the considerate gesture of Greece would be honored and recorded in history.

"Greek parliament’s initiative further contributes to the foundation of the Palestinian state," he said citing from Dailysabah.

"We are very proud that we are here at the bastion of the Greek democracy," he further stated.

According to ABCnews, Palestine’s flag was hoisted for the first time at the United Nations headquarters in New York on September 30 symbolizing gesture towards full recognition of its existence.

Indonesia has for so long stands on the Palestinian side and thus President Jokowi took a moment during the Asia-Africa Conference in March 2015 to declare Indonesia’s support for an Independent Palestine.

The Managing Committee of the 60th Asia-Africa Conference, Luhut Pandjaitan informed how out of the 109 countries in Asia and Africa who were present at the event, initially were not all supporters of Palestine.

With the circumstances given, the Indonesian government tried to encourage other nations to declare Palestine’s independence.

"Our Ministry of Foreign Relations are currently lobbying these nations so that they will be willing to participate themselves in the declaration process," Luhut informed at the Presidential Office, Jakarta on March 31 2015.

Palestine Foreign Minister Riad Al-Maliki went to express his state’s deepest gratitude during the International Conference on Question of Jerusalem held at Borobudur hotel Jakarta not so long ago, for the never-ending support and unfailing commitment, claiming that Palestine is "forever indebted to Indonesia".

“We have had excellent, cordial, open and friendly discussion among friend. We are satisfied with the level of relationship that exists between two countries. We feel that these are our responsibilities on both shoulders to carry out such task to make furtherance of the relation,” he said.

"We don’t see any reason for us not to maintain such smooth relationship. We see things from the same eye, to continue deliberation on discussion, not just at ministerial level but also at higher position such as deputy position. Capacity building is very important, we are investing for the future, Indonesia believes in such investment," he concluded.
