Relish the 'City of Gastronomy' Famous Serving of Sichuan Hotpot

The deliciously spicy taste of the hot serving makes faces go red with runny nose and watery eyes.

Liputan6.com, Chengdu - Sichuan, one of provinces in China Southwest region, has been playing key role governing Western China’s economy due to abundant supply from massive agricultural production base. It is also the home of the underprivileged Chongqing society who mostly professes as fishermen in the Yangtze riverbanks.

Back in the days, these fishermen spent the early hours of their days trying to catch fish while soaking their lower body part into the cold water of Yangtze river. Their catch surely makes up for the area's unprecedented economic progress as it very much contributes to the sector of food supply as we see it now.

These fishermen end their days with a nice and simple serving of what we know now as the famous ‘Sichuan Hotpot’. While many view Sichuan Hotpot as Asian mix of stew cooked in a metal pot put in the center of a fancy dining table, little did they know that this was originally the simplest serving of the middle to lower class people residing in the outskirt area of Sichuan province.

"These people would gather around the stove which is blazed by the heated coals underneath," Chengdu tourguide, Zou Wenli explained to Liputan6.com during media visitation held in the last week of August 2015.

"They did not use any fancy food material as the stew for their traditional hotpot servings like what we have now such as chicken meat, cow meat, prawn and others. They only use basic and inexpensive ingredients they could find," he continued explaining.

Time was progressing and so was the hotpot's road to popularity in other areas. It is famous for its hot sensation and spicy taste in a person's mouth. Such unique and intricate combination of both has made it extremely attractive with now its prominence reaching the international level.

The savory taste of Sichuan hotpot has contributed to the naming of the Sichuan as 'City of Gastronomy' by UNESCO. This suggests the fact that it is not only unique due to its pleasurable flavor but also because of preservation of its most valued culinary culture.
