Malaysian PM 'Likely to Survive Corruption Scandal', How?

Sea of people have been demanding for the resignation of Malaysian PM following reports of over $700 million transfer to his account.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - This Saturday (29/8/2015) has come as a major challenge for Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak as scores of protesters rally along the major streets of Kuala Lumpur demanding for his resignation from his current Prime Ministerial post following reports from investigators claiming that a mismanagement of the debt-laden state fund 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was discovered during probing executed last month.

The discontentment of general population inevitably exacerbates shortly, after they noticed another alleged misconduct of their Prime Minister receiving a payment to his bank account of over $700 million from unnamed foreign donors.

Citing from BBC News, Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak 'denied any wrongdoing' and will have to face the inevitability of rallying protest to expand to other cities such as Kota Kinabalu and Kuching which are situated on the borderline closer to Borneo.

Time reported that his denial to such malfeasance has caused him to be extremely angered by those who have alleged him and said to have consider the notion of suing 'the journal for libel'. He has previously cut off his Deputy Prime Minister, Muhyiddin Yassin during a cabinet reshuffling in late July where he questioned transparency over highly suspicious transfer directed to PM.

Though the authorities have unconditionally denied any permit proposed by protesting groups and declaring any action relating to such as 'illegal', it does not stop the pro-democracy group 'Bersih' in the country from spurring similar outrage in other parts of the region.

According to Reuters, there has been a growing fear that what had happened in 2012 may resurface again. During that period of time, a catastrophic rally akin to what had occurred today took place in Malaysia with the authority similarly denying any permit from protesting groups who have applied for it and ended in the most hazardous way with police resorting to the belligerent usage of water cannon and tear gas to disperse protesters.

It has been learned however, that organization such as 'Bersih' movement comes as the least of the government's worry as they have been viewed as lacking the proper leadership gesture to spur broader public support from the general population.

The Director of Independent pollster Merdeka Center, Ibrahim Suffian shares his remarks through Channelnewsasia about how the ouster would not have a direct impact to PM Najib's position, as the hostility against him 'is concentrated in urban areas' and that a national survey held early this month had showed what seems to be an evident of only small scale from the overall population 'opposed the rally'. Furthermore, it has been reported by the Malasia's Anti-Graft Agency that the funds paid into PM Najib's account was a donation from the Middle East and has been in his account even before the 2013 election.

What gives a way for the suspicion to wreck havoc, is the fact that the identity of the donor remains unrevealed hitherto.

But surely many remarks have been made regarding the unlikeliness for such ousting to even reach successful accomplishment. A Professor of Asian and International Studies at the City University of Hong Kong, William Case tells why PM Najib is likely to survive from such beleaguering scandal through an interview with Deutsche Well (DW) Broadcasting company.

"While there is little doubt Najib removed his deputy because of his outspokenness over the 1MDB scandal, the PM will likely survive the current scandal so long as splits within the ruling coalition are avoided and the discontents of ordinary citizens are distracted," William said to Gabriel Dominguez on a special interview held this Saturday.
