Government Urges Netizen to Report Negative Social Media Account

There are rules in the virtual world that are often neglected by people and those who violate it ought to be reported to authority.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Now we are entering an era where virtual world dominates reality. This can be seen from the growing interest of worldwide population to make good use of technology. Some people may find it consoling to find a virtual outlet where he or she can vent whatever feeling or opinion they want to share and have the whole world informed about it.

While many assume that the internet world poses no threat and have no exact rules to comply with, or even if there are terms and conditions provided in each site still largely overlooked most of the time, the government comes to remind them that even the internet has strict policies that disallow people to do certain things.

Indonesia has a law that specifically manages all kinds of activities done virtually. Its establishment was on the 2008 with its Act Number 40 year of 2008 regarding Information on Electronic Transaction (ITE).

Digital Democratic Forum held a discussion session on Wednesday 26 August 2015 to talk more about what should and what can be done to avoid people from violating the rules in the internet that they may not be aware about all this time.

Specialized staff from Communication and Information Ministry, Deddy Hermawan said that every posting on social media is being constantly monitored and if violation is made whether it is voluntary or involuntary, the account owner can be reported to authority.

There was a case revealing the fact that an anonymous person has posted largely provocative statuses on Facebook with hate-message decorating most part of his/her profile. The Ministry went to report this to the police and investigation is under way.

"We reported the account owner to the police along with other accounts that violates internet rules. Actually, we have been doing this for quite some time but not many people know" Deddy said.

This suggests that even in the internet word, law is being upheld rightfully and freedom of speech has its own limit, when it impinges on others, the subjugated may report such violation and bring the person to justice.(Akp/Rie)
