North Korea Agrees to Peacefully end Stalemate with South Korea

North Korea regrets wounding 2 South Korean soldiers and decided to defuse tension with Seoul halting its anti-Pyongyang propaganda.

Liputan6.com, Seoul - In the early hours of Tuesday 25 August 2015, an agreement has been reached between North Korea and South Korea to put an end to the standoff that had for quite sometime signaled the possibility of conflict escalation to a full- scale military confrontation.

Such immediate pacifying gesture was becoming more apparent following reports of two South Korean soldiers being victimized from land mine explosion which occurred this month. Citing from NBCnews, the National Security Adviser to South Korean President Park Geun Hye, Kim Kwan Jin reported that the exchange of artillery fire immediately halted when casualties were involved and that North Korea profoundly regrets its consequential belligerence.

It took both sides as long as two days to finally come to an agreement on putting an end to the stalemate with North Korea admitting regrets over wounded South Korean soldiers in a landmine incident and Seoul agreeing to stop his country's propaganda against Pyongyang. Most notably, the closure to such stalemate has opened up the opportunity for both sides to oversee the tumult that had entangled the two divided Peninsula and assure imminent follow- up talks to explore a range of issues designed to improve the relations.

"It is very meaningful that from this meeting North Korea apologized for the landmine provocation and promised to work to prevent the recurrence of such events and ease tensions," Kim Kwan- Jin, South Korea National Security Adviser speaking on behalf of President Park Geun- Hye and Seoul informed through televised news briefing.

There will be talks in the coming months to examine the issue in a larger context with ambition set for positive outcomes and lucrative deal on each promising to refuse any action that appears as staging any form of provocations.

“I hope the two sides faithfully implement the agreements and build up (mutual) confidence through a dialogue and cooperation and that it serves as a chance to work out new South-North relations,” Kim continued in a televised news conference.

Surely peace talks for reconciliation are not uncommon and many have been largely overlooked thereby causing escalation of conflict. This time however, the situation may present itself in a whole different way with positive intention becoming more vivid than ever. (Akp/Rie)
