Russia Explains Why Indonesia Needs Nuclear for its Economy

Ambassador MIkhael: Nuclear energy is one of the cheapest way to generate huge amount of electricity which is necessary for RI economy

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Indonesia has considered the notion of having its own nuclear power plants as to address the gradually diminishing supply of fuel oil issue. Nuclear energy is viewed to be a relatively cheap and efficient replacement for gas and oil.

Energy as power sources is necessitated to create a powerful strand of electricity capable of meeting the everyday needs of a country's population.

With resources of oil depleting in a gradual manner, countries including Indonesia takes the option of resorting to nuclear energy as a substitute.

Resorting to nuclear energy usage as a substitute to oil for fuel surely invites criticism from those who view nuclear as synonymous to acute- scale atomic bomb or weapon powerful enough to wipe off a large portion of a country's population.

This has been the growing assumption that populates the mind of many uninformed individuals around the world.

Differentiation should be made and acknowledged by the general society as to nuclear energy and nuclear weapon.

The presence of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has already contributed to the effort in differentiating between the two as they function as the invigilators who continually monitor countries with nuclear capabilities and make sure that it is for peaceful purposes.

On June 3 2015, Indonesia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom to provide further assurance of both countries' compliance to safe and peaceful usage of nuclear energy.

Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mikhael Galuzin explains why he views nuclear energy as imperative and appropriate replacement for oil in a big economy like Indonesia.

According to him, nuclear energy is both efficient and cheap which is perfect for Indonesia as 'One of the fastest growing economies'.

"This dynamically growing economy needs a lot of electricity and generator facilities and the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP)," Ambassador Mikhael answered to Liputan6.com question in ‘The Ambassador’ program on June 26 2015.

"Russia is one of the world’s leaders in the area of construction of NPP and the area of servicing this NPP. We are now building NPP in countries like China, India, Vietnam, Iran, Bangladesh, Jordan and other countries within Europe," Ambassador Mikhael said.

According to Ambassador Mikhael, Russia is ready to become partner with Indonesia once it announces its readiness to actually build NPP. (Akp/Ein)
