Why Jokowi Think These 2 Men Fit for TNI and BIN Positions

Sutiyoso and Gatot Nurmyanto will soon be inaugurated as the Head of Armed Forces (TNI) and Head of Intelligence Agency.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta The Indonesian population has been loitering for President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to announce his finalized decision on the names of individuals which have successfully met the requirements to become the successors of previous Head of Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) and Head of Indonesian Intelligence Agency (BIN).

Jakarta's former Governor, Sutiyoso has already been viewed to be one of the strong contenders that were taken into consideration by President Jokowi to govern the nation’s intelligence department.

His career highlights, which include serving in the military for a relatively long time and became politically active during the time in which he attempted to run for President, have supposedly contributed to the naming of him as the one with the most potentiality and capabilities to carry out President Jokowi’s agenda particularly in the sector of intelligence.

As for the Head of Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has collectively decided to appoint Commander Gatot Nurmantyo to replace its predecessor, Moeldoko on June 30 2015.

Spending a great chunk of his lifetime in the military with dedicated placed upon the ground force (AD) division, he is viewed to have what it takes to lead the overall military department.

Prior to his appointment as the Head of TNI, he was reported to have been the only contender considered.

Their appointment as the Head of two prominent government institutions surely invites many criticism from those who oppose them.

Each appointed candidate has a number of drawbacks their oppositions try to reveal to the public.

For Sutiyoso, or the man who is commonly called as 'Bang Yos', those who oppose him went to dwell on the notion involving his poor track record of violating human rights (HAM) during the time in which he was active in the military and considered his appointment by President Jokowi as politically- motivated.

His supposedly human rights violation which involves the taking over of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) office in 1996 is the primary reason why he is seen as ethically unfit for the position.

But the current Secretary- General of PDIP, Hasto Kristyanto surprisingly accepted the fact that Sutiyoso had once tried with force to annex the office of PDIP and believes that he can provide them with a reasonable explanation.

"We are convinced that Sutiyoso has a reasonable explanation for the rights violation he committed back in 1996. We will make sure that questions regarding that will be answered. But of course, we respect the President’s decision," Hasto informed on June 25 2015.

As for Commander Gatot, those who disapprove of his appointment to become the Leader of TNI, based their reasoning on the fact that he violates TNI Act 13 verse 4 which stated that the appointment of TNI leader should be done in a specific manner with each division taking turns in presenting its personnel to become the candidate.

This means, after Commander Moeldoko, which comes from the ground force (AD) division, should be replaced with personnel from other division such as the Navy (AL) or the Air Force (AU), depending on the existing sequence.

Commander Gatot, similar to his predecessor Moeldoko, also comes from the Ground Force division.

The fact that the law of TNI has been largely ignored makes Commander Gatot’s appointment a debatable one.

President Jokowi is scheduled to lead the inauguration process of both Sutiyoso and Gatot. Both candidates will be inaugurated together at the Presidential Palace but the exact date remains debated.

Previously, it was reported that both of them will be inaugurated on Monday 6 July 2015 but President Jokowi said that he has not yet set the official date.

"Not yet, we will find the right moment for the inauguration to take place," President Jokowi informed on Sunday 5 July 2015. (Ein)
