Jokowi Boosts Students to Contribute in Nation's Development

Jokowi encourages Muslim University students to help nation's progress despite presence of ISIS, drugs, economic and ideology challenges.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Indonesian President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has assigned Vice President Jusuf Kalla to represent him to the recently arrived foreign delegations for 60th Asia- Africa Conference Commemoration as he is currently in Surabaya since yesterday to  attend the 55th Harlah Muktamar of Indonesian Islamic Students Movement (PMII).

In front of thousands of people, President jokowi points out a number of challenges and events the nation currently faces.

President Jokowi firstly opens the discussion with the topic of ASEAN Economic Community.

According to him, the purpose of AEC is not only limited to economic sector or matters such as free market but also about ideology.

"If we are being reckless, then one important aspect such as ideology has the capacity to ruin the nation’s morale," President Jokowi said as he opened the event which was held at Agung Mosque in Surabaya, East Java on Friday 17 April 2015.

He also points out issue such as poverty.

He views poverty as rooting from the lack of human resources in Indonesia which hitherto has reached 15,15% from the total population.

"We have insurmountable natural resources. We just need the human resources to take care of it," he continued.

The following issue he focused on is the rampant widespread of drugs in Indonesia.

Millions of Indonesians have been the victimized by drugs and President Jokowi hates the fact that he has to put some of them in jail and give them heavy capital punishment.

However, he thinks it is the right choice to establish fear among users so that they will not redo the same mistake.

The last thing he put forth is the emergence of radical contingent such as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Its influence has extended to many parts of Indonesia with many fleeing the country to become members of the extremist group.

"Right now there are 541 Indonesians who have been detected as ISIS members. Ironically, the number is predicted to escalate as time progresses. I instruct all of you avoid compromising with such group or those who have decided to become their members," President Jokowi concluded. (Akp/Ein)
