RI to Decide Second Execution Date After Asia-Africa Conference

RI Attorney General assures no cancellation on execution for those in the second round death row but decides to wait until AAC finishes.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Many people question the seriousness of Indonesian government in its endeavour to uphold the law as execution on the second batch of the death row inmates has not yet been performed.

Not to mention, the specified date for such capital punishment to take place also remains undecided hitherto. The Indonesian Attorney General’s decision to keep the date unspecified is not without reason.

His lack of assurance towards the people who have been loitering around for the final verdict on the execution date is dictated by the country's need to avoid postponement, delays or even cancellation of the execution process.

The involving institution identifies certain inmates who have tried to prolong their lives by requesting for another Judicial Review on the charges made against them.

These inmates continue to fight for their lives despite the higher probability of their cases to be rejected  by the court judgment.

So, if the Indonesian Judicial system decided to set a date before these inmates request for the re- review on their cases, then the government has to officially announce the postponement of the execution which eventually puts the authority in a negative light.

Thus, it is better off for them to keep the information regarding the execution date as a secret and internally decides the best timing for it to take place.

The Indonesian Attorney General, HM Prasetyo persistently assured the society of the Indonesian government's seriousness in executing a number of inmates currently in the death row.

HM Prasetyo however, refuses to provide information regarding the date for the execution but informs how it will occur shortly after the 60th Asia- Africa Conference Commemoration which will be held both in Jakarta and Bandung this month finishes. The event will be held from 19 through to the 24th of April 2015.

"Apart from the fact that many of the inmates request for reconsideration on their cases, the soon to be held Asia- Africa conference is also another factor which contribute to the hitherto undecided execution date. Surely, with this grand event we ought to reconsider the execution date. It is a matter of code of ethics. It just does not seem right to have executions taking place at the same time when our country is visited by honourable foreign delegations from various nations," HM Prasetyo explained at the Presidential Palace, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (7/4/2015).  (Akp/Riz)
